3.2.8 Qualified administrative/academic officers

The institution has qualified administrative and academic officers with the experience, competence, and capacity to lead the institution.

Alcorn State University (ASU) has effective leadership to accomplish its mission by employing administrative officers with the credentials, expertise, and experience appropriate to the duties and responsibilities associated with their positions. The president delegates the day-to-day administration and management of the major divisions of the university to administrative officers. The administrative officers are the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Vice President for Student Affairs, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Vice President for Marketing and Communication, Vice President for Finance and Administrative Services, Director of Educational Equity and Inclusion, Assistant Vice President for Athletic Compliance and Academic Services, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Chief of Staff. The attached vice president resume and senior administrators file provides comprehensive information about their credentials and experience. As can be seen on the administrative chart, each vice president has had experience in their assigned area ranging from 15 to 40 years.

The Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs has the authority to appoint academic deans upon subsequent approval by the president and the Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) Board of Trustees. Responsibilities of the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs are listed in the position description. As indicated in the academic dean’s chart, each dean possesses credentials which support their qualifications to serve. Each dean holds a terminal degree and have experience in higher education ranging from 9 to 12 years. The deans file provides comprehensive information about their credentials and experience.

Hiring Process and Evaluations

Job descriptions are posted and a hiring process is completed to ensure administrator qualifications. Each position description outlines the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for these positions. To ensure that persons holding key leadership positions in the institution are qualified to carry out their responsibilities, each individual undergoes a meticulous hiring process and annual evaluations. The hiring process includes reviews and interviews by a search committee and a review of credentials by the Office of Human Resources. Vitas for each individual verify that he/she holds the credentials necessary to carry out the responsibilities of senior administrative officer positions. 

An annual evaluation is conducted for all senior administrators and deans to ensure that they are fulfilling their obligations competently and effectively.
